Luke Nicol was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1979.  He has always been drawn to the power and beauty of Lake Superior's North Shore.  He graduated from Lakehead University in 2003 with a B.A. majoring in painting and sculpture.

Since then, Luke has developed two distinct painting styles.  One focuses on Lake Superior and surrounding region.  Techniques of plein air painting and studio work are combined to create vivid, life-like paintings.  Luke also paints in a surreal style, in which stream of consciousness methods are used to develop colourful compositions containing both representational and non-objective forms.  His paintings have been exhibited at many locations in Thunder Bay, Atikokan, Toronto and Duluth.

In 2007, Luke received a Northern Arts Grant from the Ontario Arts Council towards a solo exhibition, at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, in November of 2009.  The exhibition will consist of an installation of paintings of Lake Superior's North Shore.
